The Most Successful Ski Racer Of All Time Is Retired

Austrian Marcel Hirscher has been dominating over the men’s World Ski Cup for years. The technology specialist won the overall World Cup for an incredible eight years in a row. At the age of 30, he finally decided to spend more time with his family. Hirscher has been asking himself this question a few years earlier that is the competition more important than family or not. But his athletic record was almost flawless; the last possible registration would have required at least two more years at the absolute limit. Hirscher won twelve World Cup championships during his career, became an Olympic champion, seven times was crowned as the world champion and took 67 individual victories in World Cup races. There are many doubts that anyone else can surpass this series soon.

Achieved Everything?

Hirscher increasingly asked himself the question about his goals. The only title that he did not reach for a long time was the Olympic champion. But when he reached this goal also, the media began to speculate whether Hirscher would step down immediately after the race. The idea had indeed occurred to him at that time. But the discipline of the top athlete prevailed over the heart. Hirscher continued the season and won the overall World Cup once again. But the changes in his private life triggered the changes finally.

Family Comes First

Eventually, the ski star became a father and immediately set other priorities in his life. He put the happiness of his young family ahead of his successful career. There he would have had only one goal in mind. The Swedish ski legend Ingemar Stenmark still holds a record forever. At a time when slalom and giant slalom dominated in the Ski World Cup, the Swede achieved an incredible 86 victories in his long career. To break this record, Hirscher would have had to continue at this level for at least two more years. Many observers saw this as a very realistic way, but the Austrian denied this goal.

Only One Record Remained Open

It is noteworthy that the record of Stenmark only came within the reach when no one would have thought it possible. Marcel Hirscher had a difficult injury but returned more reliable than ever. In a season that he had already written off, he has been doing better than before and celebrated endless victories. However, a year later he revealed that it was extremely exhausting to him. After all, he was used to finishing countless to-do lists every day for ten years.

His pace of work has slowed down, and the serenity has increased. If the smartphone does not ring for two days today, the former ski star considers it a gift. He is breaking new ground professionally. He is working as a TV presenter, still traveling regularly as an ambassador for one Austrian bank. He has not yet made a final decision about a new long-term professional activity.
