Famous Female Skiers

Famous Female Skiers

It is highly difficult trying to select a short list of the best female skiers of all time as there are so many of them, even if we narrow the list down to Olympic Alpine skiers it is a difficult task. Nevertheless, in this blog we highlight some of the best women who have ever hit the slopes, in no particular order of merit so as not to give offense.

Janica Kostelic – Croatia

As far as Olympic recognition is concerned, Janica Kostelic is one of the very best. She amassed four gold medals and two silvers in the Winter Olympics of Salt Lake and Turin. Kostelic was tipped to further her tally but injury struck at the Vancouver Games. Kostelic’s qualities really showed when the conditions were tough, lesser skiers could not cope with difficult weather and snow, but it was pure meat and drink for this Croatian dynamo.

Vreni Schneider – Switzerland

Vreni Schneider – Switzerland

Vreni Schneider announced herself to the world in the Winter Olympics of Calgary and Lillehammer when she took an amazing five medals, three of which were golds. As far as female racing skiers go she was one of the most prolific and was actually honored by her country when they declared her as the top Swiss Sportswoman of the entire 20th Century. She was even immortalized in the Half Man Half Biscuit song Uffington Wassail, Vreni Schneider…you’re my downhill lady.” Sometimes rock star but definitely always a top-class skier, Vreni Schneider goes into the downhill skiing hall of fame.

Hanni Wenzel – Germany

Officially Hanni Wenzel raced for Liechtenstein but was born in Germany. Her first Olympic medal was at Innsbruck in 1976 where she got a bronze medal in the Slalom. Then at Lake Placid she took golds in two disciplines, the slalom and the giant slalom. Married to the famous Austrian downhill racer, Harti Weirather the pair were skiing’s golden couple, and their daughter hardly surprisingly also became a racer. The talented family have gained seventy five percent of all the Olympic medals that Liechtenstein have ever won, and that includes summer as well as winter.

Rosi Mittermaier – Germany

Rosi Mittermaier

Another top German skier, Rosi Mittermaier won gold medals for the slalom and downhill at the Innsbruck Games in 1976. Born in a small town named Reit I’m Winkl on the Austrian frontier, she was hailed by the people of Innsbruck as a local hero. Mittermaier has also followed down the same path as Vreni Schneider when she took up singing with her sister Evi Mittermaier. The siblings actually made two studio albums of Bavarian folk songs which were good sellers not just in Germany. Rosi has a famous son with her husband Christian Neureuther, Felix. And he too is a talented world cup skier, with thirteen victories under his belt up until now.

All these fantastic skiers have a common trait, and that is they are all fierce competitors. Undoubtedly, they also have bucket loads full of talent also, but it takes far more than talent to win an Olympic gold medal. Their sheer determination to be among the elite of their sport has driven them to success, and they have proven this to the world.
